Child of God is the story of Lester Ballard (Scott Haze), a violent and twisted man who is trying to live a normal life in a town with no family, no real home (he’s camping out in an abandoned cabin) & no true friends. The townsfolk ostracize him for his strange behaviour and treat him like a criminal. This causes him to become more and more twisted and turn to criminal acts each one worse than the last before resorting to cave dwelling and essentially being on the run from the entire town. So in case you have been in outer space or living under a rock recently, 12 Years a Slave is the true story film based on the book/memoirs of Solomon Northup. It recounts his tragic story of being a free black man living in the 1800’s who was kidnapped and sold into slavery. With no papers and a change of name by the kidnappers, he has no chance of escape and is therefore condemned to a brutal 12 years of whippings, extreme and horrible work and living conditions and moments of kindness are few and far between. It is an eye opening tale about a completely different time and the horrible way black people were treated and the despairing reality of what their situations and circumstances were like. (more…)

This film is about American Daisy (Saoirse Ronan) who is sent to England to live with her cousins (I’m actually not sure why it’s never really explained). She’s very much a city girl who finds herself living way out in the countryside and hating every minute of it. After she finally starts settling in there is a massive attack and multiple bomb explosions which leave her and her cousins isolated on their property fending for themselves as an apparent war begins to happen around them.

Saoirse is really great in this roll portraying the stereotypical big city girl who is completely shallow with a side of depression but transforming convincingly into a tough girl who can take charge when the going gets tough and battles her way through and troubles that face her. (more…)

So here we have a zombie movie with a twist, you see, The Battery really doesn’t focus much on the whole zombie aspect at all instead the main storyline & focus is actually on the friendship and general relationship between the two main characters. These two guys have been together since the zombie invasion (or whatever it was in this circumstance) happened. They have only had each other for company and you can start to see the cracks form in the friendship and the stupid things they start to do either to each other or themselves to take away from the boredom and solitude. Yes there are zombies and they do appear frequently throughout, but they mostly are just background annoyance to these two guys or ways for them to hassle or taunt each other.

I need to make note of the opening scene which starts with a guy sitting on the front steps of a house replacing batteries in his Discman. (more…)
